save it in .gimp2.x/pattern/, take the fill tool and choose pattern in the settings!

In GIMP 2.4 all you need to do is to copy your custom pattern to the clipboard. The contents of the Clipboard shows up in the Pattern selection dialog and can immidiately be used. If you want to keep your pattern for later, you can select "Edit->Paste As New Pattern" from the image menu.
