HELP! Converting RGB to CMYK

Hello everyone,

I've made a recipe book on behalf of a charity and am now ready to print to get it out in time for Christmas. I've merged each layer group down so that each layer is now a whole page. However, I'm struggling to convert to CMYK in version 2.10.18. I have downloaded the ICC colour profiles from adobe. I also downloaded the gimp version from partha.com with all of the plug ins already installed. However, when I went to image> separate, there was no option to separate and I'm not sure where to get the plug in from for this version.

I am a bit of a novice so would really appreciate some help! Thanks so much in advance!

Gimp 2.10.18 ? from Partha. Is this a Windows version or Mac version? Anyway.

The plugin Separate+ has not really worked since Gimp 2.6, Barely with a few tweaks in Gimp 2.8 Definitely broken in Gimp 2.10

There is an alternative, Cyan see: https://cyan.fxarena.net/ which can be used stand-alone or with an associated Gimp plugin

There is a long thread here on installation and use. I will pop a link in towards the end but do read all of it. https://www.gimp-forum.net/Thread-CMYK-color-mode-Gimp-2-10?pid=19264#pid19264

There are other considerations. Do you intend to submit to the printer as a PDF ? Do not use use Gimp, use the free DPT program Scribus.

Just one or two pages with illustrations to convert ? Maybe do it on-line. see: https://www.rgb2cmyk.org/

HELP! Converting RGB to CMYK

Hi Rich thanks so much for your response! It's the windows version.
Okay that's good to know. I'll try that plugin thanks so much. Yes it's going to the printers as a PDF, and there are 138 pages all as layers.

Sadly I found out about Scribus too late, and I don't have time to make it all again. Do you know of a way of importing xcf file into Scribus? I've found talk of it on the internet but can't seem to put it into action.

AFAIK No real easy way to go from many layers in Gimp to many pages in Scribus. Scribus is frame based - text frames - image frames, so every page needs to be copied and pasted bit-by-bit Gimp-to-Scribus and formatted as well.

Scribus keeps text as text, embeds the text font information in the PDF and is the way to go.

The problem with Gimp PDF is that embed text part is broken. Make a PDF with Gimp and it looks great on your computer with all your installed fonts. The PDF gets to the printers, they do not have the font(s) installed. Your PDF looks terrible with default replacement fonts.

Not the way to go but you can

1. Export your document as a multipage tif file 2. Use ImageMagick www.imagemagick.org - a command line application to create the CMYK PDF.

What are the snags ? Text is no longer text, it is flattened into graphic (raster) format. Each page is a 'picture' This was the default for Gimp 2.8, nothing new.

the command is

magick -colorspace cmyk -profile .pdf

You need that .icc file so a basic generic CMYK.icc attached

..and a 4 minute example video to go with all this. https://youtu.be/35rKA8Bs71E

best of luck

HELP! Converting RGB to CMYK

Hi Rich,

Thanks so much I really can't tell you how much I appreciate your help!

I've followed all of these steps but keep getting an error message in the command promt: magick: unable to open image 'newcompressed': No such file or directory @ error/blob.c/OpenBlob/3537. magick: no decode delegate for this image format `' @ error/constitute.c/ReadImage/572.

I do also have trouble exporting as a TIF with GIMP telling me tiff image plugin could not save image gimp, and also some other errors such as unable to read one line.

Do you have any ideas on how to fix this? Many thanks in advance!

Very difficult to give advice on those errors.

Best guess for the ImageMagick (IM) error is the image in some other place than the cmd terminal. I keep everything in a single folder to avoid using "path-to-file-name.ext" and run IM from there. Avoid spaces in file names as well. Then the no decode delegate might be IM looking at the CMYK.icc as an image.

Exporting the tiff from Gimp. That is not looking good. Indicates some issue with your Gimp file. Don't know.

...And a bit more.

How many of the 138 pages contain images ? If not too many then a cut and paste in Scribus can combine text and image.

In Gimp 2.10 export as a PDF as pages and every layer is a separate page. You can end up with 4 or 5 pages = the title page.

I can open that PDF in Scribus and get those pages. While text is not text, it is a vector image and that makes for 1) a smaller pdf 2) better quality.

..and forget that, at least for Windows. Totally unable to get Scribus and ghostscript (needed for a PDF) to open a multi-layer Gimp 2.10 exported PDF.

Sorry just seen this! Interesting so I could important the pdf images and text as separate pages? Sadly there is at least one photo image on every page, but it's something I can definitely look into. Thank you!

Would IM be able to convert RGB PDF to CMYK PDF perhaps?

HELP! Converting RGB to CMYK

Would IM be able to convert RGB PDF to CMYK PDF perhaps?

quote..Sadly there is at least one photo image on every page,..unquote

No way round that with Gimp, you have to merge the text with the image. Then text is no longer text.

rgb PDF to cmyk PDF using IM

Possible with the same proviso as before. Any text is converted to a graphic which also makes large PDF files.

The command is (and I hope that this time, this dumb, useless forum does not scramble it)

magick -density 300 rgb.pdf -evaluate Pow 0.454545 -colorspace CMYK cmyk.pdf

and if you find that the colours are too light

magick -density 300 rgb.pdf -evaluate Pow 2.2 -colorspace CMYK cmyk.pdf

The density commands are there otherwise IM will use 100 ppi (same as Gimp default PDF import) and you get a low quality fuzzy PDF.

forex signals

forex trading signals

https://www.freeforex-signals.com/
