Failed to open NEF files on Ubuntu

Hello all,
I have an operation system as Ubuntu and .NEF extension pics. I want to open raw files of Nikon D3500(.NEF) in GIMP. Despite of I've installed softwares like Darktable or rawTherapee or UFraw etc., I can not open raw files with GIMP. When I click open in GIMP and select raw file, the software gives two errors as seen in the screenshot. I am new on using Linux system and GIMP. Could anyone help me abot this issue? Thanks.

Calling error for procedure 'gimp-file-load': Error opening file /tmp/gimp/2.10/gimp-temp-239350.tif: No such file or directory

Opening '/home/sedef/Desktop/Fotograflar/103D3500/DSC_7808.NEF' failed:

Raw Nikon plug-in could not open image

First there were no any files named as gimp under tmp. I don't know it is proper way to do or not but I've created a file named gimp and 2.10 manually :) I am adding in screenshot again. There is also file named as "snap.gimp" under tmp. It was automatically created before.

does darktable successfully open the file DSC_7808.NEF ?

Yes darktable and other softwares successfully open the file. By the way, I receive this error when I want to open every NEf file not only 7808.

You should give the version of Ubuntu (18.04 / 19.04 / ..or ..) that you are using.

Check the appropriate plugin is enabled in Edit -> Preferences -> Image Import&Export

uFraw is not going to work, I use nufraw in a kubuntu 18.04 because it suits my workflow however I can demo Gimp 2.10 / RawTherapee (RT) in a ubuntu VM.

I have a feeling that RT has to be version 5.5 or better You might need this PPA adding to get a suitable version

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dhor/myway

For what its worth 2 and a half minute video opening a NEF file

gimp creates the directory /tmp/gimp/2.10/ if it does not exist.

I initiated gimp to access a NEF file earlier, 12:19 my time (-5 hrs) and it has not yet completed converting the file @ 14:18 but cpu usage continues to decline. that said, I seldom if ever use this approach, preferring darktable to work photos. I may utilize gimp after the fact but with a converted jpg or tiff/png.

have no idea what "snap.gimp" is or where it comes from.

I am canceling the process to load sub nef via dt.

gud luk,

fwiw: closed gimp instance but child to load raw image via darktable did not close and is still running. should not gimp clean up after itself?

Ahh.. just seen that bit "There is also file named as "snap.gimp" under tmp. It was automatically created before."

If you have installed a snap version of Gimp then it is 'sandboxed' and RawTherapee / Darktable ... will not work.

I've checked everything as in the video that you shared in your previous message. Everything is the same. My Ubuntu version is 18.04.3. I installed GIMP from Ubuntu Software. I did not know it was snap version or not. What do you mean by saying sandboxed? Can't I take this situation back? Will it be a solution to delete and reinstall GIMP?

Failed to open NEF files on Ubuntu

Nikon provides 2 free programs for it's NEF files: Capture NX-D and ViewNX-i. I use them to import D810 photos and to make changes in post. Output to jpg or tif and tweek in GIMP. I don't know how/if they work with Ubuntu. Worth a look.

"Capture NX-D is a non-destructive RAW image processing application that utilizes a sidecar system to save adjustments for Nikon photographers looking to edit and process Nikon .NEF or .NRW files. By using a sidecar file, instead of storing changes in the original file, Capture NX-D is non-destructive. This means you can always reprocess an image without having to undo all of your previous changes."

This is a problem for beginners to linux and also Ubuntu. Linux is more 'hands-on' than Windows.

The 'default' Gimp for ubuntu 18.04 (bionic) is Gimp 2.8.22 You saw something in the (dumbed down) ubuntu software center that said Gimp 2.10? That gets you a 'snap' version. Because bionic does not naturally support Gimp 2.10 library files, all the necessary files are included in the snap 'sandbox' Gimp 2.10 runs but it is divorced from the rest of bionic files. The RT installation does not register. Similar installations are 'flatpak' which you will see on www.gimp.org and a portable Gimp, an 'appimage'.

To get a working Gimp 2.10.14 (present version) for bionic you need to add a PPA. These are additional repositories provided by individuals giving applications not normally available in the main ubuntu repositories ( read repository = software center)

This is a terrible forum for going into details. You can get a step-by-step procedure for installing a 'regular' Gimp 2.10 here:

https://www.gimp-forum.net/Thread-Gimp-2-10-10-and-Ubuntu-18-04-LTS This is for 2.10.14 Ask any questions there, I am easier to get hold of.

You will need a better RT. Details for adding the PPA are here:

Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation. Before that I deleted GIMP regarding to your previous comment and install GIMP on the terminal and automatically GIMP 2.8. Then I tried to open NEF files and it worked!

Regarding to this comment I installed GIMP 2.10 and got all of the packages updated. Then BUM! Now I can open NEF files in GIMP 2.10. Finally it worked! Thank you so much again. I think I should use 'terminal' more :)
