White background instead of transparent

I want to make a transparent background, so first I go layer - transparency - add alpha channel.

I select around my image and then go select - invert selection. Then I delete the background

I am left with the image I want and the transparent checkerboard background just like how I've done it for years

When I got the export I export as PNG my image has a white background instead of a transparent one..

I was having no trouble with this, yesterday it worked just fine, this just started today so I re installed gimp. Maybe something in my registry is corrupted.

No need to reinstall. Gimp doesn't use the registry anyway, everything is in your Gimp profile(*).

But still I would ascribe that to user error. Can you show(**) a screenshot of the layers list before you export?

White background instead of transparent

Hi, here is what things look like from my end.

Question, does this happen when the png file is re-opened in Gimp

or

Are you using a separate viewing application. Not all will 'honour' transparency.

When you export the image to PNG, did you check the box to "Save color values from transparent pixels"?

Things look alright on GIMP side from yur screenshot, but for the fact your image filename lists it as a ".jpg".

The jpg file format has no support for transparency, and the "simptons" of trying to save transparency to such a file would be exactly waht you describe.

Are you sure you are really making your export to a png file? And if so, are you sure the other application you are using to view the file correctly supports/shows this transparency?

Even with this checked, transparency will still be transparency. It should be checked depending of the intended use of the png file - if you want to be able to "unerase" parts of it, or if it is being used as texture on a 3D program you will need to check it - otherwise leave it unchecked for better compression.

Exporting such an image as a PNG works for me, but for a similar-sized image, the PNG is 32MB, slow to export, and slow to load.

This said, have you checked with several different image viewing apps that your background is always white, because the white background can be added by the image viewer (for instance Firefox displays transparency as a very light gray (224,224,224)) . And what do you get when you open the PNG in Gimp? Is the transparency gone?

The issue was, even though i selected PNG from the drop down on the right, it was exporting as jpeg. I hit the + select file type (by extension) on the left and a box popped up and from there i selected PNG and that fixed it.

Nothing broken there - the file type filter on the right limits the displayed files to those matching the type chosen, and the file type selection can be used to choose a type (and file name extension) for the exported file.

There's hardly ever any need to change the latter from its default "By extension" setting, though.
