Semi Transparency

I've been looking everywhere for a tutorial on how to get this sort of transparency effect on a photo, .. can't find anything. How do you take an image and put a gradual transparency effect on it where it starts out 100% on the edges then slowly darkens up towards the middle. Like this one: http://i.imgur.com/B1gl3Ml.png

Thanks

The quick solution:

* Layer>Transparency>Add alpha channel * Make a selection, on what you want to keep * Select>Invert
* Select>Feather (the value you give is the span of the partial transparency)
* Edit>Clear

The "Pro" solution is to use "layer masks": http://blog.patdavid.net/2011/10/getting-around-in-gimp-layer-masks.html
