Export and save options grayed out in xcf file

I have a photo that I have been restoring. I save it in xcf as version a, b, c, and rotate the versions as I progress through the restoration.

Version b is the most complete.

I would like to export to .tif, but that optioin (and the Save option as well) is grayed out.

There is a verison b.tif, but it is not as complete as the current b.xcf file.

What have I done wrong?

Help appreciated.

Thanks.

Caruso

I dual boot Ubuntu and Windows 7.

In this instance, I was running Ubuntu (13.10).

I was finally able to export the file by righ-clicking on the canfas and using 'file-export' from that drop-down menu.

The drop-down menu from the top ofthe screen did not allow many options, though, most were grayed-out.

I never noticed that before. Is it an Ubuntu anomoly?
