Embedded thumbnails?

I was just choosing a JPG to open in the gimp Open Image dialog and when I clicked on the image to open, I think the preview thumbnail was of the same image in an uncropped and unprocessed form. Does gimp use some type of embedded thumbnail as a preview image?

It uses the Exif thumbnail, if available.
