Fonts not displaying/working in Gimp 2.8
I am using Gimp 2.8.4.
Win XP Pro, SP3
Had the same problem.
Fixed it by doing this, try it, it might work in your situation too:
Search for the Gimp-file "fonts.conf" (without the quotes) Make backup copy of this original fonts.conf file. Paste this copy of original fonts.conf file, rename this copy if necessary. Edit the fonts.conf file, using a text editor. Go to the line where it says :
WINDOWSFONTDIR
Edit line
to read :
<!--<dir>WINDOWSFONTDIR</dir><br/><dir>C:\WINDOWS\FONTS></p><p>Save the font.conf file.
Exit the text editor.<br/>Start Gimp.<br/>Go to Edit,Preferences.<br/>Select "Folders".<br/>Select "Fonts".<br/>In right hand side of font folders dialog box :
Select the "folders" icon.<br/>Type in the exact path to the windows fonts directory you just added to the
fonts.conf. file.<br/>Click OK.<br/>The Prefs Dialog will close.<br/>Open it again, go to the Fonts Dialog box again.
Select the path which you have just added.
Move it to the top position using the green UP arrow.
Click OK.<br/>Close Gimp, Start Gimp.<br/>Your fonts should display and work now.
Not OK ?<br/>Delete the font.conf file you have just edited.
Rename the copy to font.conf<br/>This will bring back the old situation.
Good Luck !</p>

So this doesn't work because of the . in there (but why would it work on all other windows versions then?)?

Michael,
The "dot" in there is a typing error. My mistake, sorry.
I am NOT a programmer, so what I found out is by trial&error.
It would seem the solution lies in the exact path to the windows\fonts directory,
in both the fonts.conf file and the user preference settings. They must match.
In my "fonts.conf file" the fonts section starts at line nr.24 .Here's what I found out:
ORIGINAL FONTS CONF.FILE :
Line 24 :
Line 25 :
Line 26 : WINDOWSFONTDIR
I CHANGED THESE LINES TO READ LIKE THIS:
Line 24:
Line 25:
Line 26: <!--<dir>WINDOWSFONTDIR</dir>
Line 27: <dir>C:\WINDOWS\FONTS></p><p>Line 25 is blank. I commented out line 26 and added line 27, the path to my windows\fonts directory.
Added the path in Preferences etc. and moved it to the first position of the list in the fonts settings dialog box.
The list itself was created at installation of the program, it looks like.
I am using gimp in single window mode, with text toolbox opened.Type text, select text, chose font.
Good luck, hope it works on your computer, too
Sorry for the typo, BasBeiter</p>

I assumed so, but it could of course have been an error in the file that is distributed with GIMP.
Now,
WINDOWSFONTDIR
is supposed to work - the WINDOWSFONTDIR is a variable that is recognized and replaced with the actual fonts directory value by fontconfig when this library reads the file.
Can you put the original line back and check with a tool like Process Monitor where the fonts files are being searched?

Tried the PEMonitor -Cannot find any special process that's got something to do with font-loading.
Tried with original fonts.conf & reset Preferences. Result: fonts load OK, work OK.
Put back edited fonts.conf file.Fonts loaded & work OK.
Settings: Single Windows, Tool Options: Add Tab, Fonts.
Usage: Pick font from fonts list prior to typ[ing text, or type text, select text, pick font from fonts list.
That's all I can come up with.
This concludes my involvement with this topic.
best regards,
BBeiter
