beginner: file-open does not work for me

beginner: file-open does not work for me
I have a jpg file in 2 different folders on my hard drive. I open GIMP and have tried file-open, file-open location and put in the url..to no avail. Last error message I got says "indexer daemon not installed/turned on"? Make sure it is running. I could not find "indexer daemon" in the help files. Please help me.
