Creating GIFs in GIMP

Hi,
I have created an animated gif with 30 Frames/Layers that runs in the 'Loop Forever' option.

I now wish to convert this GIF to run in the 'Ping-Pong' option but cannot figure how to do this without going through the whole ‘Extract Videorange’ process again as this is the only place that I can find that will allow me the option of selecting 'Ping-Pong' when I’m selecting the short clip to create the GIF from the original AVI.

I have tried opening the GIF in the main GIMP window, then selecting the ‘Video’ dropdown then ‘Move Path’. This will open a window for some GIFs, but it wont recognise other GIFs as a valid source. Even when I can get this window to open it gives multiple error messages and I can’t figure how to import the GIF into it so that I can select the 'Ping-Pong' option in the ‘Step Mode’ field.

I am using GIMP 2.6.11 as I haven’t upgraded to the new version yet.

Any help will be appreciated.

As a workaround for adding ping-pong effect to your existing GIF animation install and run mirror-layers python script. You can find it here http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-tools/files/scripts/

Creating GIFs in GIMP

Hi Again All,

Before going to the trouble of installing Python for Gimp on my laptop and then installing the 'Mirror Layers' Python script, I tried selecting the 'Ping Pong' option in the 'Extract Videorange' window. Having then gone through the exporting as a GIF etc. the Gif still just played as a continous loop with no sign of executing the Ping Pong effect ?? Has the Ping Pong option ever worked when producing GIFs in GIMP ?? Does it work in the new version of GIMP ??

Creating GIFs in GIMP

Hi All Yet Again,

When I discovered that the new version 2.8 of Gimp already has Python support incorporated in it I decided to download and install Gimp 2.8 onto my PC.

I then tried to download the ‘mirror-layers.py’ file a few times from http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-tools/files/scripts/ as suggested but kept just getting a page load of script on my screen, however I eventually managed to get the ‘mirror-layers.py’ file to download to my hard drive.

I then copied this file into C:\Documents and Settings\Jim\gimp-2.8\plug-ins but it does not show up when I open Gimp and select ‘Filters’ – ‘Python-fu’, I only see an item called ‘Console’.

Any help would be appreciated.

As stated in http://gimp-tools.sourceforge.net/animationtools.shtml : "The script appears in the menus as |Image/Mirror layers| and has no parameters."

In the general case ... I have d/l'd a script/plugin and can't find it? ... go to Help - Plug-In Browser and enter some text you would expect to find in the name of the plug-in. In this case "mirror" would probably be enough. (I can't check exactly because I don't have this plug-in)

e.g. if I type "outline" one of the two hits is to script-fu-3d-outline-logo which I can see is to be found at /File/Create/Logos

Hi Again All,

Many thanks Ofnuts I guess I just didn't read the instructions correctly and was looking in the wrong place. I found the Mirror Layers plugin where stated, in the Image dropdown menu. It's working perfectly and does the job exactly as I required.

Thanks again everyone for your assistance and patience in answering my queries.
