JPEG Quality Slider

I am a rookie user...with all photo editing software; when saving JPEG images, is lowering the Quality sliding scale the same as lowering the compression setting? If not, how does one lower the compression setting in GIMP? Thx,

the opposite. Lowering quality = raising compression

And the higher compression, the lower file size: Higher compression → smaller file size and lower quality.
