What was used to create this graphic?

I am a graphics newbe.

I have to modify the text in the attached. Looks like a gradient was used but the text is reversed down to the pixel level in terms of color.

All I need are the right tools in GIMP to edit the text.

If you can reproduce the button sans text, you can duplicate the button layer, invert one of the duplicates, draw your text normally in black, and set (a copy of) the text layer as a layer mask on the inverted copy.

There is a simpler way: select a one pixel column in the left, just near the text then scale it horizontaly. Faster than pasting. :]

For extra randomness, use smudge tool to break up the perfection due the horizontal strech.

Use the scale tool scaling only in one direction, with no interpolation. After copying and pasting the 1 column wide selection to its own layer.

As simple as scale tool (and rotate tool rotates when you need it! ;] ). Work zoomed and/or use the numerical input.
