The usual ways is to use Levels (Color > Levels), take, black, grey or white color pick and pick a color that is known to be black, grey or white color respectively.

This is a very simple script to use:

- use the color picker to set the foreground color from some part of the picture that should be grey or white. - call filter,
- done.

The colortemperature script by the same author is also a good catch.

Thanks for your quick help.
I imported both scripts. After trying the script colortemp was the good one. Again, thanks.

Just in case, you can use colortemp interactively via experimental GEGL tool ("Tools > GEGL operation" menu). This will draw preview right on canvas. For a large image this can be too slow, so you can temporarily resize, find the best setting, undo resizing and apply same operation with preview disabled.
