Why does my GIMP STB when I try and put text along a path

Can't work out why my GIMP is shi*ting the bed when I try and put text along a path. Here is what I do;

Single layer. Create a path. click the text tool (the path disappears from view - is that some kind of bug, or a layer 8 issue?). Add text. Click 'text along path' {outline is seen along the disappeared path}. Delete the original text layer for tidiness. Click Select from path.... 8 out of 10 times the box will max out to 100% CPU and GIMP starts to run like a slug.

I really love the GIMP - I'd love to know just why it STB like this? It's 2.6.3 on Ubuntu 8.10. 4gb memory, dual core.
