Gimp crashes

With an opened photo, the "filters" section runs ok. However, "tools" and "colors" crashes Gimp with a Windows message that the "program has stopped working". Downloaded/installed Gimp 2 times with same problem.

I don't know what version of GIMP you are running...but GIMP 2.6.6 under Linux (Debian) Squeeze does a similar thing. It locks up Linux so tight I have to do alt-sysrequest and reboot. Check the GIMP help "about" menu to find out what version you have. I have posted this problem on the Debian mailing list but got no advice or answers. Maybe I'll file a bug but it seems no one else is having the problem under Linux anyway.

Please check the bugtracker at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/ before you ask on the mailing-list. This looks like another duplicate of bug 577581.

Same version I am running - but the developers seems to think the problem under Linux is a question of running out of memory. But I have never had the problem until now with 2.66. An earlier version under Ubuntu Intrepid does not suffer the problem. Who knows.

uninstalled version 2.6.6, and installed version 2.4.6, and had no problems,so far, with this version!

I plan to do the same thing...version 2.6.3 runs fine on my machine...2.6.6 give me constant lockups. One of the developers thinks it's a driver issue..in his words "GIMP can't lock up your computer" like it does. It may be a driver issue...but I can't stand getting 2/3 through retouching a photo to find out the machine is locked up.

Gimp crashes

I get the same thing. So I checked my event logs. I get 0xc0000005 error, To figure out what this is, you drop the 'c' and plug it into net helpmsg. This is what I got

C:\Users\thisisme>net helpmsg 5

Access is denied.

So for weeks I tried to think of what it is trying to access. I kept thinking that Vista updated itself and caused the problem with a new version. I think this is partially correct as it did not happen till a while after I installed 2.6.6

Finally, it hit me. Vista gives you grief when you access some parts of the c:\documents and settings folder. So I right-clicked on the gimp-2.6.exe file and said run as administrator. This worked moments ago so I am unsure as to the permanency of the work around. I am posting in the hopes that the developers will see this and correct it on their end

The above error is due a memory access fault aka segmentation fault, it has nothing to do with file access.

This is still very interesting, does GIMP crash for you when you use color tools if you don't run as admin? I.e. is running as admin a workaround for the frequently reported color tool crash problem?: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=577581

Best regards, Martin

Excellent, CCing gegl-developer.

Jernej, any clues of why this might be?

Gimp crashes

I'm running GIMP 2.6.6 on Vista Home Premium SP1. If I use GIMP normally and try to use Colour Tools->Contrast-Brightness GIMP just stops working and crashes. If I run GIMP as administrator then I can use Colour Tools ok.

So I guess it is workround.

============
Or re-install it for a user (you)
Or set it for general use. (I know it can be done, but I don't remember how.) Check Microsoft's Help and probably any one who supports a Microsoft office group.

Or try to help the developers by figuring out what exactly is causing these problems. So far, people who probably could tell this in an instant were rarely affected by such problems, so it seems to be up to those who are to investigate.

Using tools like Filemon (or maybe Microsoft's Standard User Analyzer) could maybe provide some insight.

Start gimp up, create a new blank image, then select something from the colors menu and it should work from then on. u just have to keep doing this everytime u start gimp.

The GIMP 2.6.6 installer was corrupt, the GIMP 2.6.7 installer has this problem fixed. If you install GIMP 2.6.7, you should not get these crashes anymore. Is it 2.6.7 you are seeing these crashes in?

HTH,

I have been grumbling and grizzling for ages with this crash problem until I read this Forum. I uninstalled 2.6.6 and replaced it with 2.6.7, surprise surprise! No more crashes so far.
