gutenprint compatible printers?

I am using gimp 2.6.4 under Fedora 9. I also have gutenprint 5.0.2.

I have been using an Epson 1280. but I would like to be able to replace it if it fails. (I just had a very hard time cleaning the printheads.)

gutenprint tells me is supports the Epson Stylus Photo R1800 and R2400, but neither of these seems to be available. Can I assume the Epson Stylus Photo R1900 is just an updated version of the R1800. How about the Epson Stylus Photo 2880 and the R2400?

Is there some way under gimp/Linux to print using the Epson 3800?

My printer is only a modest Epson model but I must confess that I was always having problems. So, I decided that I would spend some money and buy some software called Turboprint and I have never regretted the expenditure. I believe there is a free download available to try.

It looks like a useeful tool, but the list of supported printers seems to be the similar to that for gutenprint. For example, its also lists the 1800 and 2100 but not the 1900 and 2880. It does list the the Pro 4800. but not the Pro 3800, so it is possible the latter works if you specify the former.

I have started doing color management, and I can do that with photoprint which uses gutenprint, so that may also be a limitation.

i have the epson r2400 that i have been using for some time with xp. i recently have been trying to make it work with ubuntu 8.10 here is the printer/driver data: Epson Stylus Photo R2400 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.0-rc1. the problem i have with it is that it won't print wider than 8.5" or longer than 11".it just crops the image and prints it in one corner of a large format paper. i believe that it is a problem with the driver, perhaps a #define'd constant when there should be a variable in one of the routines. i'm hoping to find a solution to the problem but until then i'm stuck with mrbill. i print almost entirely large format, up to 13x26 inches.

I've been printing 13 x X ( X = 17 or 19) for years using the gutenprint gimp plugin and my Epson 1280. Gutenprint allows for a wide variety of formats, which include among others Suber B. I suppose it may not allow a size larger than the printer can accept, but I've never tried that. I assume your version of gutenprint also allows the same variety of formats.

a couple of points: first, i don't know how you're cleaning the old 1280. you can get them for nothing from people who have let them dry and clog. i use two methods, both easy. method 1, very very carefully (not bumping into any sensitive machinery) use a small hypodermic to apply a small amount of windex to the foam pad that the ink jets rest on when they are all the way to the right. let them sit over night and run a nozzle test. if they fail the test, method 2, park the ink tanks in the ink changing position. use a small hypodermic syringe (without a needle) to pump a little distilled h20 thru the jets. to do this, remove both ink tanks. look down and you will see the two little nipples above the jets that the ink tanks plug into. a standard disposable syringe will just fit over the nipples. just a few ml. are all you need. paper towels under the printer are a good idea. replace the tanks with new ones if you can. run a nozzle test. i have seen cleaning solutions and kits for sale but i think the magic cleaning solution is just h20. i have used this technique to resurrect several epson dye-based printers. regarding the epson 3800, you might want to look at one of the other epson pro series printers there is a 17" model that uses k3 inks that may have drivers available. the 3800 is limited in paper handling options, lacking rear and front load paper paths (i believe.)

Lorenzo,

Thanks for all the advice. Your instructions are more explicit than what I've seen elsewhere.

The other printers that can handle 16 x 20----what I am aiming at---are much heavier and take up more space, as well as costing more. I'm not sure I can handle even the 3800. One major factor which has deterred me is the cost of the ink. I'm not sure I can make enough prints to justify that cost. In any event, unless the economy and my retirement income recovers, I won't be making any such purchase any time soon.

I am also trying to master color management well enough to be able to send an image off to be printed with predictable results. If so, I can have a lab make my occasional prints larger than 13 x ...

My 1280 prints have mostly held up pretty well, but the pigment inks look as though they would be better in that regard.
