ANNOUNCE: GIMP 2.6.0
Finally we have done it and released version 2.6.0 of the GNU Image Manipulation Program. The changes from version 2.4 are best described in the release notes on
http://gimp.org/release-notes/gimp-2.6.html
If you want to compile GIMP 2.6 yourself, you can grab the tarball from ftp.gimp.org or one of its mirrors:
ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/v2.6/
Please note that there was a glitch in the 2.6.0 tarball on the FTP server that was corrected after a few hours. If in doubt, you can use the following information to check that you have the fixed tarball:
filename: gimp-2.6.0.tar.bz2
size: 15897821 bytes
MD5 sum: e5ac955fee8b376d431e4693027d7640
Binary packages for the various supported platforms are expected to become available over the next couple of days. The new gimp.org website will help you to locate the packages for your system:
Thanks a lot to everyone who helped to improve GIMP.

Many thanks!
Unfortunately, even though I'm running a recent version of Linux, Fedora 9, I cannot build this version. Some of the requirements are out of reach for this latest stable version of Fedora.
Has anyone been able to build a gimp 2.6 rpm for Fedora 8 or 9?

What requirements "are out of reach" for Fedora 9?

It complains about babl (requires 0.0.22, version provided by Fedora is 0.0.20) and gegl (requires 0.0.18, provided is 0.0.16).
When I tried (forced) to build with the provided versions I ran into compilation errors so I decided to consult the list first before trying to proceed.

Sorry - I meant gegl.org provides babl and gegl downloads :-(

the announcement probably should have noted the dependency; Fedora 9 hasn't yet caught up with all the changes to the gimp dependencies.
I don't think F9 is the only distro suffering...
The bottomline appears to be that the Gimp really depends on these very new versions of babl and gegl.

Where will it end...

No problem in Debian Sid: the source distribution compiles without any problem.

"Very new" is relative, they are from June. And without GIMP, would any distribution ever add those libs?

GIMP 2.6.0 for Fedora 8/9 (Was: Re: ANNOUNCE: GIMP 2.6.0)
Okay, mission completed.
For a limited time the necessary Fedora RPMs can be found here:

Feel free to copy these to the download area. These RPMs are for Fedora 8, but should work on Fedora 9 as well. Or at least the SRPMs should be rebuildable on F9.
Thanks all for the support and the nice 2.6 GIMP!

I note in the explanation that there is no mention of using CMYK color model, beyond what is already available in the preview feature. Is manipulation in the CMYK model in the works for some time in the future? Does the move to GEGL smooth the path to CMYK in some way?

No one is actively working on it and it is not considered a high priority feature. Working in the CMYK color model is not important for the product vision of GIMP. It might perhaps be implemented one day, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.
What might happen is better support for CMYK separation. But that only gives you CMYK export, it doesn't enable you to work in the CMYK model.
Does the move to GEGL smooth the path to CMYK in some way?
Yes, it definitely makes it easier. But it doesn't come all by itself.

To answer my own question, I downloaded the plug-in from

and it seems to function with 2.6 ok

I do feel 100% percent like Eric. I want to thank all the develpers and team working in this wonderful software. Not only I like the gimp, but also it's a symbol of what the whole open source movement means to me.
Me too, forever thankful :-)

ANNOUNCE: GIMP 2.6.1
GIMP 2.6.1 is a bug-fix release in the stable GIMP 2.6 series. The source can be downloaded from ftp.gimp.org or one of the mirrors listed at http://gimp.org/downloads/#mirrors
Binary packages for the various supported platforms should become available soon; please check the Downloads section on www.gimp.org. Rumours are that the 2.6.1 installer for Windows will include a version of GTK+ that has the utility window hint implemented, keeping the GIMP toolbox and docks above the image window and out of the taskbar.
