Should we replace the 'Zoom when resizing image window'-button?

Hi

There is a little button in the upper right corner of each image window with the tooltip "Zoom image when window size changes".

I have never used this and I can't figure out in what way it is useful. Does anyone ever use it?

I suggest we replace it with a shortcut to the "Resize window on zoom" option which I find much more useful.

Does anyone have any objections to this? Should some completely other feature be accessible through that button?

It's useful in that it lets you scale the window exactly as big as you want -- you're not limited to 25%, 33%, 50%, 100% etc.

That said ...

I don't (partly because I always forget it's there). I set the "Resize on zoom" preference, and usually scale with the +/-/1 keys.

I suggest we replace it with a shortcut to the "Resize window on zoom" option which I find much more useful.

It seems odd to devote space to toggling a preference like that ... in theory, the current functionality seems more useful since it lets you do something that isn't otherwise possible. But as I said, I don't actually use it very often in practice. And it's not very discoverable. I didn't know from the tooltip what it would do and only found out by experimentation. It might be clearer if the tooltip added a few words, e.g. "Zoom image to fit window when window size changes" or "Zoom image proportionally when window size changes".

I don't? know how many people actually rely on this toggle. But this is a usefull behavior when you scale up small image by a 2 or 3 times factor (rather usefull), and could be anooying when scalling down.

So maybe, one thing would be to make GIMP's defuaslt behavior to be: - if the image is scaled up and the window is smaller than a certain percent of the screen(like 60%, or space for the main window + dockables at the sides), the iamge window would increase in size - if the image is scaled down, do not reduce window size. (Or reduce to the minimum size where all menus would fit in the menu bar)

I don't think it is useful to use this place for a preference toggle that is unlikely to be changed frequently. The current button has been added on user request. I don't really see why we should remove it now, or worse, change its meaning.

Let's keep it for 2.6 and give Peter a chance to think about what should happen to it.

Hi

For the record:
After discussing this on IRC a couple of realistic use cases emerged, so this button will stay.

One adjustment to the behaviour was also agreed upon: When the toggle is turned on and the (scaled) image is smaller than and within the viewport, implicitly do a View -> Fit Image in Image Window.

That sounds like a good idea to me. Let's do that.

Quoting Martin Nordholts :

Would it also not be reasonable to perform a Fit Image whenever the button is toggled on? This would provide easier access to Fit Image than the menus and be fairly intuitive. You wouldn't change modes unless you desired a fitted view and you should not need to wait for a window resize to obtain it.

No because that would break the use case that you have zoomed in and panned to a specific area of interest in the image and would like that area of interest to remain when you resize the image window.

Note that the behaviour for the above use case is a bit buggy so that needs to be fixed as well.
