Using GIMP GNU on computer clone image?

This is a read-only list on gimpusers.com so this discussion thread is read-only, too.
Using GIMP GNU on computer clone image?
To whom it may concern, I would like to know if installing Gimp GNU on a computer image to be cloned to school computers is a violation of the software license/agreement? I work for Howard County Public Schools in Maryland, and am currently involved in creating images for our computers for this coming school year. I've had requests to place Gimp GNU on our images. I would appreciate any assistance you could give me on this matter.
Thank you,

It isn't a violation. Please proceed :)

FAQ: Does the GIMP license permit to do x?
Hi,
from time to time we are asked whether the GIMP license permits to do this or that, for instance publish GIMP created art or redistribute GIMP.
GIMP itself is licensed under the [GNU General Public License, version 3], the GIMP libraries are licensed under the [GNU Lesser General Public License, version 3]. Both describe the usage conditions.
In case of doubt the following documents might also be
helpful:
- http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html (a comprehensive
collection of frequently asked questions).
I hope this helps.
Kind regards,
Sven

Does GIMP allow cropping using a NUMERICAL pixel value for crop depth?
Dear GIMP users,
Is it possible to express for an image (PNG, JPG etc) the cropping depth (for each of top, bottom, left, right) in terms of an EXACT number of pixels?
This would be VERY useful for preparing images for web pages, where required cursor access is given in terms of (X ,Y) pixels. The GIMP cursor based crop mask - useful as it may be - is not really up to this particular precision requirement.
In advance of some insight,
Many Thanks,
Eric Scharf (waverley2007@tiscali.co.uk)

Did you spot the text entry fields in the crop tools tool-options-dialog?

I wonder if it would be good creating a highlights page for publishers. Sort of like a faq addressing common concerns. e.g.
Can GIMP be freely distributed on physical media (CD, DVD, Magazine) or digital media (download from a third party website)? Yes
Can GIMP be modified and freely distributed? Yes but it is recommended (not required) to change the branding in cases of heavy modification so that the GIMP brand is not affected by usage of your modified version.
Can GIMP be used for commercial purposes? Yes
Can works created in GIMP be sold? Yes. Works created in GIMP are entirely owned by the creator of the work to do whatever they wish.
Can the GIMP logo be used as part of my event XYZ? Yes/No? Just coming up with another question at this point.
For more details about the rights provided to you by using GIMP see the [GNU General Public License version 3][license]

The idea is you extract all of the legalese out of the conversation and filter it down to what people care about. By people I mean those who are considering to use GIMP for whatever purpose.

Do you or anyone else on the list have thoughts about this? I think a quick overview page would be a great idea for people reviewing GIMP for regular usage. What are some thoughts of others? Agree or disagree (and why)?

FAQ: Does the GIMP license permit to do x?
Hi,
I haven't reviewed all the answers in detail but yes, I think it's a good idea to take these questions and their answers to the official GIMP FAQ site http://www.gimp.org/docs/userfaq.html
We had a talk at LGM how to protect GIMP's name and the Wilber logo. AFAIK Schumaml wanted to ask the FSF for advice, but I don't know a newer state here.
Kind regards,
Sven
FAQ: Does the GIMP license permit to do x?
IANAL, but...
Since GIMP is released under GPL, would it not be better to point to existing info and FAQs (e.g. http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html) rather than reinventing it?
Whatever is done, surely it needs to be carefully checked (possibly with legal advice) to ensure it's consistent with the actual conditions. For example (not an exhaustive review, just a quick glance through) taking a few items from the list below:
Can GIMP be freely distributed on physical media (CD, DVD, Magazine) or digital media (download from a third party website)? Yes
Does this not come with the proviso that source code is also made available?
Can GIMP be modified and freely distributed? Yes but it is recommended (not required) to change the branding in cases of heavy modification so that the GIMP brand is not affected by usage of your modified version.
Doesn't the license *require* that modified versions make clear that they are modified (Section 5a)?
Isn't the publicised license the one at http://www.gimp.org/about/COPYING?
Mark.

This effort would really be helpful.
FOSS is the standard tool set for schools in State of Kerala. And the students are most impressed by GIMP. It would really help if a simplified page (Like the one Sam Gleske has shown) is available for a single application, explaining the rights, responsibilities, and privileges.

FAQ: Does the GIMP license permit to do x?
*accidentally skipped the ML in my reply*
The point was the license is covered in legalese. There's nothing wrong with humanizing in layman's terms and stating that in terms of contradiction the actual license take precedence. Look at creative commons. They break out a few key points of their licenses and then link to the full license for legal consumption.

FAQ: Does the GIMP license permit to do x?
Also FWIW,
I just spent the last few minutes (maybe 5-10 mins) looking for the GIMP
software license (while pretending I did not know that it was located with
the source code). There needs to be a Legal link on the front page (either
in the main menu or at the bottom of the page in the footer menu) where
links to all associated licenses can be found in one place.
The links could include:
wgo website source license
GNU Free Documentation License for the Documentation
GNU GPLv3 for GIMP software itself.
Additionally the FSF provides a handy little quick guide to the GPLv3 [1].
I think we should make finding the licenses on the website easier for those who are interested. It is essentially a central page to find all things legal related to GIMP. Perhaps, on the hypothetical "Legal" page when there's a link to the GPLv3 also provide a link to the GPLv3 quick guide [1] to ease its consumption.

You could write this text for the GNU GPL and LGPL, and discuss with the FSF whether it represents the licenses appropriately.
