Indeed, if "Save is lossless" is a law, "Save" has to be to XCF, and something else has to be used to "save" to any other format.

Nonetheless, I can't help but think that few people would buy a gun that makes it hard to shoot yourself in the foot.

Most of use like to be treated like intelligent beings, not being forced or told how we "should" be working.

How many "top level" marksmen would want a gun that only did what the designer thought was "safe" ?

There are no laws. GUI design does not come down from Mt Sinai on blocks of stone. If the spec does not work in some way it may need to be changed. That is what is being discussed.
