regarding this string

This is a tooltip that shows up over the "Sample merged" checkbox in Magic Wand tool (strange that it does NOT show over the "Sample merged" in eyedropper tool)

Languages es, fr, it have translated freely region_select. Language de has also translated it, but retained the _ (Bereich_sauswahl), perhaps assuming it is an accelerator (but this has no sense in a tooltip).

The same question has been posted here https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gimp/+bug/403132 but I rather add also a "selected region" variant.

region_select is a source code symbol, it should be just "selection". I've changed that now:
