About the replies to this list
Hi! I have a suggestion regarding this mailing list.
Everytime I want to reply to a post, I press the button "Reply". However, the reply-to field is always set to the post author's email address, not the mailing list address. In these few early days, I guess I have sent several messages by mistake to some users, when I meant to send them to the list.
Maybe it would be a better idea to make gimp- user@lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU the default reply-to address, like what we can find in other similar lists. What do you think about it?

I agree, I hate it when lists go to individuals by default, although just now, it automatically did it correctly for me :)

I have done the same thing. I agree. ...I keep having to cut and paste the address.

Right now, however, it is replying to both you and the list, so that works fine. Maybe your email client is not doing a "CC:" by default (which is the list)

Please read http://www.unicom.com/pw/reply-to-harmful.html and learn to use the "Reply-to All" functionality of your mail client.

But when I do a replay-all, the author will get two copies of the message, since he/she is both in the To: and the Cc: fields right? (he's in the Cc: among the mailing list subscribers, I mean) I confess I usually don't use the replay-all button because I guess that it would have that effect.

Get a mail client that has a reply-to-list function. Maybe even answers questions after they are asked, insead of before :^)

I don't plan to use another email client. I am currently using Apple Mail, and it works just fine to me. And this is the only mailing list with this "problem". I will use the reply-all, from now on...

Yes, and then we'll have the problem of auto replies when someone's away or their email is full, or their messages bouncing spewing all over the list. I know you're looking for the convenience, but setting it that way would have unwanted, unintended consequences, which is why the default settings for most listserves are reply to sender.

It seems different lists have a different behavior. I use Thunderbird, and in replying to this list, it put "gimp-user@lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU" in the "To:" field without including any others in the "CC:" fields. On another list, I get the Sender in the "To:" field and the list address in the "CC:" field. I simply click the cursor in the "To:" field, backspace it all the way out with one last time to delete the "To:" field, drop to the "CC:" field and change it to "To:" and it works perfectly, no sending two emails to the sender just one to the list. Yes, it is a little more trouble, but you'd be surprised how easy it is to make it a habit.

For what it is worth, I forward my email to gmail, and it seems to handle it fine. Reply adds the user in the To: field and the list in the CC: field, I for one appreciate getting it directly to me, as it is easier to recognize a response to my question.
