GDyntext-Plugin for new Gimp 2.2.X? Or alternatives?

Hi together,
I'm looking for a comfortable way to add symbols (f.e. from the dingbats font) with a preview. I found: Gdyntext, but I could not compile it. It is very old for Gimp 1.X and for glib1.X and gtk1.X. So the structures are completly different. I don't have time to rewrite the whole code. So:
Is there an alternative?

Thanks for tips, Bernd

Have you tried gucharmap (http://live.gnome.org/Gucharmap) ?
