recovering lost mask

I deleted the alpha channel from a layer with a mask. The mask was still evident, and still functioned. I then saved the image, and exited.

Reloading the image, I am told gimp cannot load a mask for a layer without an alpha channel, and the mask is not visible.

Since it was a lot of work to generate this mask (removing the background from a photo), I would like to recover it. Any hints?

GNU Image Manipulation Program version 2.3.14

I am afraid that you hit a bug in the development version then. There is probably no way you can recover your mask but it would be very helpful if you could make sure that the issue is being filed as a bug report to our bug-tracker at bugs.gimp.org.

I submitted a bug report, as you suggest, but the following patch allows me to access the mask:
