Help for total beginner

Hi anyone who can help me. I have just bought a new computer so that I can work with some family photos. Installed Gimp and am working through the tutorials and experimenting to learn how it works. Huge challenge!!

Does anyone know how to adapt colours. I'm not sure of the technical term, but I have a few subjects with quite red noses and other parts of the face and would love to know how to even out the skin tone. I know it is doable as I saw a photo that had had this done once. I just have no idea of how and have looked to no avail.

If anyone has any suggestions in very simple terminology as I am an extreme beginner. I would love to hear from you.

Thanks. Lia
