HELP Cannot open raw pictures in Gimp
Hello,
I need help, I just downloaded Gimp 2.8.18 and tried edit a raw image. The image doesn't load (other than a thumbnail picture). I've also tried to download an older version (2.8.14) and still the same problem. It won't open Ufraw on its own when I try to open a raw image and I tried installing it separately then transferring it to gimp with still no success. Can anyone please help me?!
I have a Nikon D7200 camera, My images are NEF files.
Thank you in advance!

Thank you for your reply. Sorry, my operating system is windows 10. I however kept searching for my options while I was waiting for a reply on here and came across Raw Therapee. I installed it and tried transferring the picture over to gimp from there and it worked!

Hi Mariposa,
I don't recall GIMP come with compatibility on RAW files - you might want to check ufraw (http://ufraw.sourceforge.net/).
Good luck,
Shawn

Native Gimp dosn't open RAW files. You need a plugin. UFRaw used to be the only one, but it is getting a bit obsolete. There is a new one called Photoflow:
https://discuss.pixls.us/t/how-to-use-the-latest-version-of-the-photoflow-gimp-plug-in/1460
But IMHO, the purpose of RAW is to spend time getting the most of the sensor data, and this takes some time and usually results in several version. So if you work on RAW, you can use the RAW apps directly on the file, save the results a good quality JPEG/TIFF files, and then open that in Gimp for the final touch-ups. There are many FOSS RAW applications.

What ofnuts said. :)
I'd also recommend using a RAW editor from Nikon for your specific camera. CNXD (Capture-NXD) is free and should get the most out of your camera's RAW data. Once you are done and wish to do further pixel level editing, User File -> Open With and register GIMP as your pixel editor. Then the image will open in GIMP.
You can also download one of my builds (portable or otherwise). The 2.9 series comes with PhotoFlow as the default RAW editor.
Hope this helps.
