Gradient tool : how to modify the gradient ?
Hi,
I'm trying to use the gradient tool, but I would like to modify the
gradient law. I guess that the modification takes place here :

but I can't do any modification.
When hovering the black and white triangle it says "click : select; drag : move.." etc, but these triangles don't react to any mouse action.
I have the same issue either on macOS or on Windows, so I probably miss something in the Gimp usage itself.

The standard Gimp gradients are normally marked as non-writable so you can not edit them , see:
Edit -> Preferences -> Folders -> Gradients
Best leave it that way and duplicate the gradient you want to edit. That saves to your Gimp profile.

WIN 7 64 bit; V. 2.8.16
I can't find any way to save the non-writable gradient to a copy that I can
edit. I've got the "Edit Gradient" tab up, and can see the gradient, but
there is no button/option to "save-as". There is a "save" button, but that
only saves that same gradient.
I must be missing something.

right click on the gradient you want to copy
select "duplicate gradient"
an editable copy of that gradient will open.

Gradient tool : how to modify the gradient ?
Does it seem like this question comes up on a monthly basis?
GIMP could REALLY use some ability to make ad-hoc edits to its otherwise ready-only assets (gradients and brush dynamics, vector brushes, etc.). Requiring users to duplicate one of these before they're allowed to change any of those settings is one reason I dumped literally ALL of the preset brush dynamics from my GIMP installation. And, I'd wager, it's probably one of many reasons why GIMP 2.8 moved 'brush size' out of the brush editor and into the tool options.
But -- (less rant, more on the topic, I agree) -- if you can't duplicate something from the Gradient editor then go to the Gradients list and duplicate it from there.

Gradient tool : how to modify the gradient ?
Then somebody's missing something, and I don't believe it's me...
On the Gradient Editor there are buttons to save the current settings, or zoom the gradient display shown in the box. It does not include a command to duplicate the gradient.
On your Gradients palette, there should be a row of five icons at the bottom -- Edit, New, Duplicate, Delete, and Refresh. Likewise, right-clicking on a specific gradient (or checking the arrow menu at the upper-right) should reveal a context menu of similar options.
Lastly, if you go to Edit > Preferences and look at the Folders section, you should have one or two entries for the Gradients folder (typically under your user path and program path) and at least one of them should be flagged as "writable".

I hope the screen shot comes through to show you what I get when I R-ckick on the gradient in the editor. Nothing happens when I R-click on the icon in the LH panel.

Gradient tool : how to modify the gradient ?
notice the list of gradients on the right hand panel
left click on the name of the gradient you want to duplicate (don't "open" the gradient)
one of the icons on the bottom is duplicate. Alternatively, right click on the name of the gradient and select duplicate.

Then somebody's missing something, and I don't believe it's me...
On the Gradient Editor there are buttons to save the current settings, or zoom the gradient display shown in the box. It does not include a command to duplicate the gradient.
On your Gradients palette, there should be a row of five icons at the bottom -- Edit, New, Duplicate, Delete, and Refresh. Likewise, right-clicking on a specific gradient (or checking the arrow menu at the upper-right) should reveal a context menu of similar options.
Lastly, if you go to Edit > Preferences and look at the Folders section, you should have one or two entries for the Gradients folder (typically under your user path and program path) and at least one of them should be flagged as "writable".

When hovering the black and white triangle it says "click : select; drag
: move.." etc, but these triangles don't react to any mouse action.I have the same issue either on macOS or on Windows, so I probably miss

The standard Gimp gradients are normally marked as non-writable so you can not
edit them , see:Edit -> Preferences -> Folders -> Gradients
Best leave it that way and duplicate the gradient you want to edit. That saves
to your Gimp profile.example attached.

Gradient tool : how to modify the gradient ?
Ah, the Gradients Dialog was not up there with the Layers, Channels, Paths, etc. It is now and now I can see what you are talking about.
While GIMP has its weirdnesses, its UI is superior to the current Photoshop CC flat & grey look thats stricktly out of the 1980s. AND GIMP fits on my screen. Plus, GIMP users are majorly helpful.

I finally found a GIMP theme that presents a neutral gray "look" suitable for editing images against without introducing perceptual bias, that does not also present useability issues re icon and menu entries etc. It's called Tactile; I don't find it in a quick web search ATM, but I do recall it was part of a big bundle of themes.
Sometimes when an image is going into a context where I know the background color that will surround it, I reset the canvas padding color to match that. This provides "best obtainable" perceptual results and avoids possible surprises i.e. unintended color matching with the background against which the image will be seen.

I think I got lucky when I adopted the GIMP - the user base and contributed / subsidized developer hours have grown and grown, and the toolkit with it. Now the Internet is fairly bristling with howto docs and video video videos. When 3.x rolls out, the GIMP will be quite arguably "the best bitmap image editor in the world."
Unless the tear-off menu glitch remains. Then it will suck.
