Cannot open PSD -CMYK setting (Rick Strong)

Hello,

for both topics of gimp-user-list Digest, Vol 62, Issue 17: use the open source program Krita. It is an image manipulation program, natively built for Linux, installers are also available for Windows and Mac OS X, that can handle both ways, rgb to cmyk and cmyk to rgb. If it can handle psds I dont know. Notice: rgb to cmyk will often end up in dull colors, because the color space cmyk is somewhat else than the colorspace of rgb - not all colors of rgb are resembled in cmyk. Regards

You might give this online convertor a try: http://www.cmyk2rgb.com/

"WELCOME TO THE ONLINE CMYK TO RGB CONVERTER With this free online tool you can convert images from CMYK to RGB color space using a professional color profile."

You upload a file, JPG, TIFF, PNG, BMP, they convert it and send it back to you--free. Maximum file size: 10MB

Subject: [Gimp-user] Cannot open PSD -CMYK setting

Hello,

I am trying to open a PSD in GIMP. Although I am aware that not all layers of a PSD might open in this case the whole psd is not opening due to some CMYK setting error.

Check attachement for the same.

Is there any workaround to open these kinds of PSDs?

Thanks

Gimp is a RGB raster editor and is not the best tool for creating a suitable file from a PS CMYK template.

The CMYK file needs to be converted to RGB first.

I'm helping a friend of mine create a business card for a new business. I created the card in GIMP and it looks great! The plan is to order cards through VistaPrint. Anyway, according to the VistaPrint website, they recommend uploading designs in a CMYK mode. Since I created my card in GIMP, it's in RGB mode.

Would it be safe to convert my image from RGB to CMYK, using ImageMagick for example, or should I recreate it using a different tool, like Scribus? I'm a Linux user. Alternatively, I could send the image to a friend who has PhotoShop and have her convert the image to CYMK mode for me.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks!

Peace...

Tom

Cannot open PSD -CMYK setting (Rick Strong)

Klaus is right on when he says that the RGB colour gamut is wider than the CMYK gamut. Therefore some rgb colours will end up looking differently when printed in cmyk.

I found this website http://www.printernational.org/rgb-versus-cmyk.php has a pretty good explanation with illustration of the difference. It also puts out good information about graphic design in general.
