Gimp installs fine but fails to start

As the title says. I'm on Windows 10 x64. Using the latest installer for 2.8.18. Installation goes smoothly, however when I boot the program it sparks a "has stopped working" message at the "updating tag cache" point. Tried previous version 2.8.16, same thing. Tried installing just the 'compact' installation but no juice.

It's possible you have a lot of fonts and it's still cataloging them. You may want to wait a little while for it to start up the first time.

Gimp installs fine but fails to start

I've got some 300 fonts, 200 of which are from Windows/Office (I guess) and some 100 from another software package I use. Is that a lot? Do you mean waiting before booting gimp at all, or giving gimp more time to complete the startup? The latter doesn't work, as it just crashes out of the boot sequence.

When you say "crashes out of the boot sequence", what exactly happens? Does the window just turn pale and sit there? On Mon, Nov 14, 2016 at 1:50 PM dexterwk wrote:

The customary advice when running Gimp for the first time is

Do not touch the mouse or keyboard, go have a cup of coffee or go for a walk until Gimp loads.

If you have a Gimp profile C:\Users\your-name\.gimp-2.8 it might be worth deleting that and let Gimp create a new one.

If it is a bad font then starting Gimp with the -f (no fonts switch) might prove that.

In a command terminal "C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\bin\gimp-2.8.exe" -f

Note the quotes because of the dumb file name spaces. see screenshot

A bad font can be difficult to trace.

Gimp installs fine but fails to start

It gets to the point where it says "updating tag cache", then a window appears telling me "gnu image manipulation program has stopped working" and that it's looking for a solution. The original message is in Dutch (as that's my windows' default language, but loosely translaten: a problem occurred which caused the program to stop working correctly. The program will be closed and you will get a notice when a solution is available. Plus a button to "Close program"

When you say "crashes out of the boot sequence", what exactly happens? Does
the window just turn pale and sit there?

Thanks. Tried both but neither worked unfortunately. I still get the "crash" as detailed in my other post.

I'd like to point out that

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=449848 [Bug 449848] Startup: initialize fontconfig in the background to avoid long pause on start

and its corresponding "not responding" behavior is fixed in 2.8.18.

This advice destroys all evidence that could be used to track down the issue. Please suggest renaming instead of deleting.

Gimp installs fine but fails to start

I read some tips somewhere else and renamed it instead of deleting :) but it's hopeless anyway as it's still the first start of the program anyway. There's nothing in the profile.

One thing I can suggest is that you download my GIMP builds from my website. You can download the portable version or the regular version.

Install it and run it. If it works, you are good to go. If it crashes, we can look at the crash log to see what's going on.

Gimp installs fine but fails to start

Hi Partha,

Just tried to run the GIMP 2.8.14 64-bit portable from what I guess is your website (http://partha.com/) Same thing happens, see attached.

One thing I can suggest is that you download my GIMP builds from my website. You can download the portable version or the regular version.

Install it and run it. If it works, you are good to go. If it crashes, we
can look at the crash log to see what's going on.

Excellent. :)

Please do the following. I

n your $TEMP folder (typically C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\Temp) there will be a file called __gimprun-2.8-run.log. Please send me this file at my email address listed on my website.

Thanks, Partha
