Help

Hi,
I've just downloaded the latest Gimp for the first time. However, I'm very frustrated. All I get when I open Gimp is a big empty box, no tools of any sort. It looks nothing like the screen shots in the manual! Along the top of the box are the menus but that's all. When I open a photograph in it, it appears as a small thumbnail that I'm unable to do anything with. Also, by default, when looking for images, it is set to recognise "All Files" but it doesn't do so, I have to select a different file then choose all files again to see the images. Hope you can help, I'm becoming extremely frustrated! Many thanks.

1. I hope you downloaded GIMP from http://www.gimp.org/downloads/ .

2. What is your system: operating system, version, CPU, CPU architecture, versions, etc.

3. Can you provide a screenshot of your screen when GIMP is running? You can use http://imgur.com/ to share it online (or any other site that does not require JavaScript to be enabled for its images to be viewed).

4. Did you try running GIMP in a new operating system user account?

Regards,

Shlomi Fish

The docks are likely just hidden - try the Tab key when the image window has the focus, or use the Windows->Hide docks menu entry.

Help

That sounds like the typical problem of opening a RAW file from a digital camera when you don't have a plug-in to handle the RAW file format.

I think you need either the dcraw or ufraw plug-in for GIMP in order for it to be able to open the photograph files. Without knowing which operating system you are using I can't offer more specific help.

Cheers!

Kevin.

HI Shlomi,
First of all, I should say I'm not exactly PC savvy when it comes to technical stuff. Yes, I read all the pitfalls about downloading any programs and can confirm that I downloaded from http://www.gimp.org/downloads/ . My operating system is Windows 10 but I'm afraid I don't know what the CPU version or architecture is. I've attached a screenshot.
Hope this helps.

Hi Kevin,
Many thanks. Yes, I've been opening RAW files. I tried again with a JPG and find that it opens fine. I suppose I need to find a plug-in for RAW files now? Thanks,
Bill

Help

I suppose I can tell you that you can download GIMP builds from my Website (www.partha.com) where the builds do not cause such issues. However, my builds are not officially sanctioned by the GIMP developers but I am not in the habit of producing malwares or viruses.
