Windows Version lacks 'Select a region to grab'

Hello!

I'm regularly an Ubuntu Gimp user, but have occasion to use Gimp on WIndows. When I have to use Windows, I was wondering if it's a version issue or missing plugin or something... but the Windows version doesn't appear to have the feature I love, that is 'Select a region to grab' in the Create | Screenshot option.

Can anyone please advise?

Thank you fellow GIMP aficionados!

Windows Version lacks 'Select a region to grab'

on 2.8.14 (Partha's build), I only have "Grab a single window" and "Grab the whole screen".

So I'm going to say that there is no region selection for grabbing screen shots in windows?

Windows Version lacks 'Select a region to grab'

Possiby a restriction due to Windows screen management. IIRC you don't get the mouse pointer when doing a screenshot of the whole screen.

Windows Version lacks 'Select a region to grab'

It has never occurred to me to use GIMP to do screenshots. At face value, that sounds like extra work, kind of like using WORD to do screenshots.

I use Screenshot Captor, for Windows 7. It is excellent, and has all the options you need. You can select, crop, resize, and do some other things I've not had to do, and save it in quite a variety of formats. It even saves it in its own screen and then you can just open the program and drag and drop to email screenshots.

Ubuntu has good screenshot programs available through the software manager, and I like them as well.

But what version of Windows are you using? Ofnuts' guess brings to mind the fact that Windows 8/ 10 has serious identity confusion; it often thinks it's a tablet. "Can't get the mouse pointer when doing a screenshot of the whole screen" - really? LOL!

You know, you could get a second hard drive and try out one of the Ubuntu flavors. Unity most closely resembles Windows 8, and Kubuntu most resembles Windows XP, and if you add the Cairo dock (requires up to date video processor and its own Linux drivers if it has them), it resembles Windows 7. Unity won't run if the video processor isn't up to date either, and it can be hard with gnome. But if you've got Windows 8, the video processor is up to date, because it's a new computer.

Windows Version lacks 'Select a region to grab'

Windows generally doesn't capture the mouse pointer when doing screen grabs. Irfanview does have an option to grab it if you want. Also, win has a handy built in screen capture program: windows snipping tool. On Mon, Aug 24, 2015 at 9:09 PM Dora Smith wrote:

I know, but on the other hand I'll very often edit the screenshot(s) with Gimp anyway, because Gimp can do eveything the screenshots editors do, and more...

Windows Version lacks 'Select a region to grab'

So are you having trouble selecting a region to grab, with other kinds of images in GIMP or only screenshots?

I haven't tried to use that feature; I use select, then copy, then paste, or else clip the first image to what I actually want and then paste it as a new layer.

If there is a selective problem with screenshots, it may be the image type or something of that sort; try saving it to a different file type in your screenshot program.

I think that’s the six million dollar question.

You replied to my post, but your answer would make sense if you met to apply to the post that I replied to.

It's two different plug-ins to begin with:

For anything but the Microsoft Windows platforms: https://git.gnome.org/browse/gimp/tree/plug-ins/common/screenshot.c

For the Microsoft Windows platforms: https://git.gnome.org/browse/gimp/tree/plug-ins/win-snap/

Probably doesn't have to be this way, that's just how it got implemented, and so far there has been no reason to change it.

A patch that unifies the code of the plug-ins, and makes screenshot.c work for the Windows platforms as well - preferably with as little platform-specific code as possible - would be nice.

Please note that this has been tried before.

Michael
