NEF opening files wit version 2.8.14

Hi,

I am new to Gimp. Installed 2.8.14 on OSX Yosemite. Works like a charm for opening raws from Fuji and Panasonic cameras, but with Nikon NEF files (older and newer) it only extracts a JPEG thumbnail.

Am I missing something here?

Thanks

Typically this happens because you have an older version of UFRaw.

Try opening a Fuji or a Panasonic file, in the lower right corner of UFRaw's dialog click 'Options', then go to the 'About' dialog and tell us, please, which version it is. Thanks.

Hi Alex,

It says UFraw is version 0.20.

I did not install UFraw, it seems to come with the 2.8.14 kit I downloaded and installed.

Thanks

You wouldn't be able to install UFRaw separately :) I don't remember the last time a DMG was available, if ever.

What's you Nikon camera's model?

Tried both a D610 and a D5500. Also Canon 6D files fail to open correctly.

Instead of letting GIMP selected the file automatically, scroll down and specifically select the camera raw images (should be a long list of files) before opening NEF images.

That did the trick! It works by selecting raw camera type instead of letting Gimp decide.

Thanks a lot!!

This is supposed to work without doing this, of course - if there isn't a bug report yet, please consider to file one.

There is no need to file a bug. This has been going on for a while with UFRaw and GIMP.

Trying updating to version 0.21 or even the CVS version.

I just choose raw (a long list of raw type files near the bottom select list for file types - if you choose to select the file type yourself).

To be clear, towards the bottom on the left of "Open image" file selector window, change the "Select File type" from it's default of "Automatically Detected" to "raw image 3fr,arl"... - the last option.

This is distinct from the file selector choice of "All images" at bottom right, which can be left as it is.

See my screen shot, attached

Then in my case I just select a .NEF file.

I hope that this helps

Is there online resource as to how I can update UFRaw to 0.21 or update CVS version? In my install on Mac OS X Yosemite (10.10.4), I don't see 'raw image 3fr,arl' or any other 'raw image' option available in the 'Select File Type' list. There is 'Raw Image Data' with extension data in the list, but that does not open .NEF files correctly.

"Raw image data" is actually "raw binary image data" (bitmaps without even a header to give height&width) not "raw camera sensor data" (this entry predates digital photography...).

UFRaw (standalone or plugin) is slowly falling behind other de-mosaicing apps. You should consider using other apps (RawTherapee, Darktable...) and then switch to Gimp for local editing towards the end of the process. Using your camera manufacturer's standard application (Nikon Capture for you) is also an option (if there is an OSX version).

I am using Partha's build of McGimp 2.1.4 from http://www.partha.com . This includes what I presume is an up to date version of ufraw, though it is not easy to divine the version.

Actually, it does claim to be a version 0.20, I am not entirely sure how meaningful that might be. Anyway, it does very well for me for .NEF files from a D7000 .

I hope that this helps

Hi, I am having the same issue and unfortunately when I try to choose the raw file type, ".data" is the only option and it doesn't work for the ".nef" files I have. Any help?

Thank you,

You need to scroll further down the list almost to the bottom where you get a long list of extensions including NEF.

Hope that helps. Partha

(thanks to Roman Lebedev for pointing me there ;-) )

Thanks for your input Sven. I will use RAWTherapee since i am a Windows user. Thanks for a constructive input.

....and before we have everybody and their sisters pee a pit on that, my machine are mandated to have Windows by my employer, who actually purchased it.
