Gimp file extensions

Hello,

I may be wrong, but I believe that in GIMP you manipulate images you open as xcf files, and you must export to get different file types, such as jpg.

To do this you need to go to: File > Export As...

In the export window that pops up, just above the help button near the bottom left of the window, click on "Select File Type (By Extension)" and scroll down to JPEG.

Hello,

I just started using Gimp to manipulate a .jpg token image that I have for Fantasy Grounds software. The tutorial I was watching showed an earlier version of Gimp which allowed you to save the image as either jpg or png extension. However, this version seems to just give me xcf extension, which my Fantasy Grounds software does not recognize. Is there a way to save the image as either jpg or png extension?

Mostly right. As Eric, the original poster, noted, you can open images of different file types, but recent versions of Gimp are imposing xcf as a native file type when 'saving.' I'm assuming this is about preserving a more complete working version with layers and whatever else might be obscured or lost with other file types.

To do this you need to go to: File > Export As...

Yes, to save, for example, as a .jpg or .png like Eric wants, this is exactly right.

gimp saves the project collection (layers, masks, channels, paths ect) as .xcf by default. to convert the project image to another file type, you must go to File > Export.

for a full list of exportable file formats, select the " [+] Select File Type (by extention) " tab in the bottom left to show/collapse the list, highlighting an item in the list to Export to that file type.

regards.
