This has been happening for a while.

While opening your RAW images, don't rely on automatic detection, but select the long list of raw formats from the dropdown list and then open your image.

Please note that UFRaw is a third-party plug-in, and adding the magic is actually done from what the plug-in provides.

Is there a corresponding entry in the bug tracker of the UFRaw maintainers?

It works because, that is the header of a TIFF file as well. Open a tiff file and examine it to verify.

I provided you with a work around. Remember the magic is provided by UFRaw.

Yes. File plug-ins tell GIMP the magic numbers of the file formats they can handle. And this is when used to select the plug-in to handle a file format.

The magic number is a feature that allows to identify the file format - or at least guess it reasonably well. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_number_%28programming%29 for more information about this.
