I cannot get it to compile in my Linux Slackware 9.1 Kernel 2.4.26 system with gimp 2.0.4 installed

Just a while back I had to deal with a windows ico file also. One thing you can do is use XnView to convert them all to a different file type.

Of course this may not work for exactly what you are trying to do, but I'm just trying to provide you with one more option.
