Clone tool not working
Hi,
I am using GIMP 2.8.2 on Ubuntu 12.10. The clone tool seems broken. It can not recognize the CTRL+left click. I have tried with setting different key, which also does not work.
It always says "Ctrl-click to set a new clone source"
Doing that says "set a source image first"
How do I solve it ?
I have searched Google for a solution for long time and have seen that few other users also faced the similar issue several times. But I cud not find a solution which worked for me .
Thanks

Does your desktop environment use ctrl+click for something else?

When using the paintbrush-tool, ctrl-clicking should function as a color-picker. Does that work?

Tangent: While I've never personally experienced this behavior personally, there ARE some times where if the Clone tool does not have a cloning source, I wish the first click should behave like a Ctrl+click and set the source automatically.

When using the paintbrush-tool, ctrl-clicking should function as a
color-picker. Does that work?
No that does not work.
In the 'Keyboard shorcut' menu, I can see shortcuts, for example, copy, cut etc, where Control key is written as CTRL but in case of clone tool, the default key is C. It does not accept at at all neither CTRL nor LEFT CLICK, while trying to reset.
Presseing C activates the clone tool but the error is as I have reported in my first mail.
Thanks.

As far as I know, ctrl+click is not set to anything else.
I have checked the System keyboard shortcut list and could not find it.
Setting the shortcut for clone to other key combinations also does not work.
Thanks

No that does not work.
Then it seems that your gimp-installation doesn't accept ctrl-clicking on the canvas on general. At this point, this is completely above me, but maybe someone else can think of something with this info.

I had recently same type of issue and could not find any related shortkey
in the standard shortkey manager :
but i could find it in CompizConfig
that features masses of possible settings possibly interfering.
Unset all the one you are not perfectly aware of what they are used for.

I suggest avoiding compiz altogether if you're painting with gimp, or at least disable window compositing - even with a fairly fast computer you'll probably notice the speedup in drawing.

Thank you for this advice.
After searching a bit about compiz I discovered that unity
is a compiz plugin - as for now, since this will change with 'mir' coming -
I like unity, so i wont get rid of compiz,
but using compizconfig i got rid of possibly heavy useless effects.

Sanjib, there probably is a soution.
But you will need to give more information. The clone tool works for most people, so it's something about your computer, or the version of GIMP you are using, or some other software you are running.
For example, tell us...
. the exact version of GIMP, and exactly where you go it;
. what operating system -- e.g. 64-bit OS X 10.3.2 on a G5 Mac Tower
. it sounds like you might be using both a mouse and a tablet, is that
true? What tablet? Which drivers for the tablet and how were they
installed?
. how *exactly* do you start GIMP? I don't mean here, "I'm sitting at my
desk facing North, wearing Adidas training shoes with green socks
and...." but more, "I use the tablet pen to double-click on the GIMP
icon on the Windows 8 desktop" or, "I open a gnome-terminal window and
type "gimp&"...
. are there any error messages?
. Is there a sequence of steps we can try, first do this, then this next
thing..., that might show us the problem too?
Without this sort of detail I don't see how anyone can do any more than guess, I'm afraid. The clone tool works fine here, but I don't have a Wacom graphics tablet.

Clone tool not working
Just in case anyone else stumbles across this thread while trying to make "tools that use CTRL" work in Gimp 2.8 in Ubuntu....
I struggled with this for weeks, was on the verge of installing Windows just so I could use Photoshop.... and then I found the solution.
- Go to "System Settings"
- Select "Mouse and Touchpad"
- UNCHECK the box "Show position of pointer when the Control key is pressed"
Then restart GIMP and hopefully, you'll be off merrily cloning and healing to your hearts content!
Hope this helps someone
