Richard, I already installed 2.8.0. and it has the functionality I need
(and also it was the version I found on net fastest).

Bottom line: This 2.8.6 was opening quite quickly, i.e. within a minute or
so, until I started changing the path to the palletes.

Even that was very good advice! I downgraded to 2.8.0 and am happy
camper :-)

2.8.4 should work fine -- the "querying plug-ins" issue seems to have
started with 2.8.6 .
