I'm really sorry. Since this message was a sort of advertisement, I thought better to make it as inconspicuous as possible. That will not occur again.

Olivier, I'm sure it would actually be fine to send a synopsis of the book to this list for people's information; I think that's more useful than being too embarrassed to tell people the book is on sale this week :-)

Yes, Amazon is smashing publishers and bookstores. And when there will be no more publishers, what books will Amazon sell?

Hey Olivier,
You might want to take a look at the PDF file for the sample chapter: In Evince, I could only see the images and page footers; text was blank, and highlighting did not make it visible. Converting it to ePub with Calibre brought the text back, but the page layouts were so badly chopped up that I could not make sense of them.
Ironically, the only thing I found that would make the PDF readable here, was to import it into the GIMP. I found a script to export the layers as images, and used Imagemagick to make them into a PDF for convenient reading. (Ironic?) BTW that script rocks:
http://registry.gimp.org/node/25394
This shows up at File > Layers next to the other Export commands.
My result is readable but not good enough to distribute for promotional purposes. I have not read it yet but it looks promising and I will comment later...

Just for the record, I opened the sample PDF file in my browser (chrome)
and had no problems...
Not sure if that means anything, but thought I'd throw it out there :)

You don't say what browser you used. i just downloaded chaper 5 from the link and then My Browser SeaMonkey open in Okular just fine. Of Course I'm in a Linux environment.
looks like an interesting book.

Browser? I downloaded the file to my desktop (Mint 14 w/Cinnamon) and tried Evince, Imagemagick's viewer, and some x-pdf thing that crashed on open. Then Calibre, no dice including when converted to ePub.
But hey! I just installed Okular and it opened the file normally. Still, I worry about the portability of this "portable document" since Evince has never failed to open a PDF file for me before, and Calibre's results were quite bizarre.
looks like an interesting book.
Indeed it does.

Evince 3.6.0, poppler/cairo 0.20.4. Everything's is fine, no errors.

Then what I am seeing has to be local. I might have some mismatched/missing libraries on board. Mint w/Cinnamon is still a little rough around the edges, and I'm still getting used to it. I like it so far:

To all who downloaded Chapter 5 of my book from No Starch's website:
I generated the original PDF using pdflatex on my Linux (Ubuntu 12.04) computer, but the people at No Starch added the book cover in front of the PDF. Anyway, on my own computer I can look at this file using Evince, Okular, Document Viewer, PDF Mod, GIMP itself, and even Adobe Reader 9, without any problem. I did not try reading it directly from any browser. I did not try reading it from any version of Windows.

"Scribus is not a PDF editor" but it can open and edit PDF files. 1.4 version is not so good at it, but its 1.5 svn version did a perfect job on the Gimp Book.

I have bought the eBook, and had difficulties reading it in using Okular, so I had to go the hard way, and install/use Adobe reader - it works perfect. And yes - I'm on Linux/Suse
