Text Along Path GIMP 2.8.2
Hi,
GIMP is a great product. I have used it for over five years now and have enjoyed learning how to use it. I generally pick things up as I need them rather than sitting through tutorials A-Z style.
Recently I upgraded from Ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10 and this automatically upgraded GIMP from 2.6 to 2.8.2.
A common tool I use in GIMP is "Text Along Path" for creating logos etc for my business.
Now, as I am sure you are aware, this is now broken in the latest release. I'm not sure if the fault lies with Ubuntu or GIMP but after two days of trying to get it to work I have decided to give up using GIMP as I can't even get the previous version to install. I have tried but to no avail (*.tar.bz2 files, babl errors - installed but still have errors, etc.).
I am usually pretty stubborn but I am throwing in the towel here. You see the computer I use is for the business and I have databases running that I don't want to have back up and reinstall. I am pretty sure that if I did a new install of Ubuntu 12.04 or maybe even 12.10 I'll be able to get GIMP running WITH "Text Along Path" supported. Unfortunately this isn't an option right now.
So in the mean time good-bye, sayonara, arrivederci, salut, ciao, au revoir, and good luck with the updates. Let me know when the hole is patched and not some over complicated fix that only works for a handful of systems.
One question: WTF happened on this latest release? (or should I be directing this towards Ubuntu?) It surprises me that we are now 1 week in to November and there hasn't been an update yet and the bug has been closed in the bug reporting system.
Take care,

What is broken? Seems to work fine for me on Windows XP.

Dear C G,
You spent an awful lot of time writing an email that was supposed to be about text on path in 2.8.2, but somehow you never actually explained what it is that is wrong with text on path.
I'm afraid I don't know what "hole" is supposed to be "patched" and hence what you should be (personally?) notified about.
Would you like to clarify?

Let me try to clarify this for you :)
I think he meant that there's no 'Along path' button in the text toolbox anymore in the Ubuntu 12.10.
And yeah, this is not great at all.
So, is this just an Ubuntu problem?

Why would you call it a problem?
The feature is still available:
1) via Layer menu; 2) via right-click menu for the current text object.
How is this a regression?

However, I still think that a button in the text toolbox is more preferable for new users because all the tutorials uses this place to show this feature.

1) There's not a terrible lot of those tutorials. 2) No buttons should be allowed to stretch that wide.
Just my 2c.

On the varoius forums I have seen several people showing cases of text truncation even when the path is long enough. IIRC at least one of these has been reported on Bugzilla.

I don't think it has anything to do with the button :), but it probably is what the OP meant. Too bad he doesn't reply to explain what he meant to say :(
OTOH, the whole feature has always been quite clumsy and has to be redone, IMHO.

Here is the reply about the bug in the "Text to Path" issue in gimp 2.8.2

GIMP | General | 2.8.0
--- Comment #15 from Michael Natterer 2012-11-07 22:28:24 UTC --- The fix will be in 2.8.4, which will be released when it will be released :)
So as the above shows the bug is known and will be fixed but no known release date.
As I said previously, I'm sure it would be fine if I reinstalled GIMP 2.6 but for my lack of persistence and knowledge with Linux that isn't happening right now. Just a bit disappointed with the product. And, yes, I realise I that I didn't pay anything for it.
I posted a full description of the problem in the appropriate areas however screen shots depicting the problem were not allowed to be uploaded due to site rules (karma, points, status, etc).
I posted the original message to let it be known that while, for some, it might be suitable to let a small feature of the program break down, others like myself use it on a regular basis even if it is for something as unexciting as creating advertising for a small business.
I will return to GIMP at some point in the future when the feature I use is up and running again or I get another machine to install 2.6 on. Regardless there is still Inkscape and the forced change is allowing me to learn more about its features.

Has nothing to do with the button. There are many ways to find the features one requires in GIMP. Buttons are there for convenience. Moving the location of where you go to access the Text to Path feature most likely had to do with real estate on the toolbar. It was more convenient to have it available at the bottom of the Text dialog box. Right clicking on the layer just adds one more mouse click to the operation.
OTOH, the whole feature has always been quite clumsy and has to be redone, IMHO.
