The word gimp is defined as:
1. a physically disabled or lame person.
2. a feeble or contemptible person.
The program was first called The GIMP, and now is called GIMP to be less offensive; now should a letter be dropped, either GIM or IMP?

I'd go for GINP. GINP Is Not Photoshop.

GIMP is an acronym. It first stood for General Image Manipulation Program. Later it got a new license, and the acronym now stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program. Whether to call it GIMP or The GIMP is a matter of context and personal preference.
& BTW, I have been using it for a decade or so, and the user interface has never given me a moment's trouble. I think it is one of the most efficient UIs I have ever encountered on a complex program.
The other day I saw a copy of the latest version of the GIMP running on a Windows 7 box and the interface was horribly ugly. I think that's because the desktop theme was bleeding over into the GIMP interface. If I am ever forced to use that OS, the first thing I will do is search for 20 minutes to find the configuration menu in question, and switch to a "classic" theme to make the whole interface less ugly and confusing.
Fortunately I don't anticipate ever using a Microsoft OS again. Thank God - and Linus Torvalds and Richard Stallman - for Linux.

Indeed. Do not change the name. This nonsense about changing names to prevent offending people is ridiculous and I'm damned tired of it. It's all over the place. You know they don't call "special education" by that name any longer? Once everyone knew what it meant, they changed the name as if it would change what the class is for. And think of how many name changes we've had for what we sometimes call "African Americans" today. (I'm down with Americans, but not African... they're Americans! It's good enough!) And of course there is the forever list of "Something"-challenged. Really? Let's just dip everything in candy and be done with it... we all live in Willy Wonka land now where no one gets hurt and you can eat everything.
You know what? I change my mind. Let's change the name. Let's call it "GIMPYS" for "Go IMP YourSelf!!"
Society needs to grow the heck up. It's not the words, it's the meaning. And if the meaning of words is a problem, then people need to learn to deal with THEIR OWN problem. Words may change but the meanings never do.

Ahah, make people think it's a new name, while they pronounce it the old way due to phonological assimilation. Sneaky.

A certain well known "closed source" image editor needs to be renamed: Call it PING. The shoe fits.
I have tried that editor a couple of times - and by "try" I mean that I got a bunch of manuals and tutorials and made a serious resolution to use it for at least a month. The longest I ever managed to keep trying was about two weeks. Some of that thing's deficiencies are possible to work around, others NOT, as far as I could tell.
Photoshop Is Not GIMP. Not even close. Of course, anyone who has invested thousands of hours in Photoshop would rather fight than switch, for perfectly understandable reasons. I only wish there were more of these folks: I have had to deal with a lot of printers and publishers over the years and about half of these encounters have been horror stories.

I have seen enough comments along the lines of the above so I now find them more amusing than annoying that some people don't pick up on the difference between a word (in lower case) and the acronym (in upper case).
While you are pointing out "unfortunate" names for things, I suggest contacting Linus Torvalds and complain about the name of his version control program called "git". You can't tell the difference between the word and the program name.
For those who don't know, it is a (mostly?) British slang term used as a form of mild insult of someone. Variations are calling someone a "lazy git", or "stupid git".
After you have talked with Linus, let us know what he said. :-)

If I recall correctly he claimed that his projects are named after himself due to his 'egocentricness'. Hence 'Linux' and 'git' =p

This is certainly going on my fortune collection. ;)
