Switching to Mac, any advice?
Hi all.
I'm switching from Gimp on Windows to a Mac.
(It's an older one, a G5 tower with Leopard only,
but it's nice to be back on a Mac again.)
Before I just download and install without
thinking, I thought I might ask anyone for
advice they might give for the best install for mac,
or perhaps any packages on mac that are better
or features not available on Windows, etc?
Thanks for any ideas.
Daniel

I had problems getting it to run on this Mac, the 2nd time I installed it. I got no help/solutions from this list, nor the Gimp on OS X (might not be quite the right name) website.
The folks that solved it were on Apple's X11 mailing list.
So, if you have trouble, and it looks like it might be X11, I'd think I'd go to the X11 mailing list first, and make sure X11 is getting installed correctly.

Last time I used a Mac, the "GIMP on OS X" link from http://www.gimp.org/macintosh/ seemed like the most user-friendly option to me. Leopard and newer have X11 included, so it's only the one download, and http://gimp.lisanet.de/Website/Photo_editing.html says Resynthesizer etc. is included, so you get lots of plugins that you'd have to download and install one by one on Windows[1].
If you want the 2.7 beta, I guess you'll have to compile / use MacPorts.

Kevin, you just had to throw it in about Linux, didn't you...
:)
I totally agree with you though.
I actually used to run Ubuntu with Gimp on that, and loved it.
But I come from long graphics experience, and wish to use many
of the other programs, video, audio etc that run on macs.
But thanks for the help. I love this list, btw. Lots of very nice,
smart and helpful people here.

Oh, one more thing, and I wish to do mobile development
and you kind of have to have a Mac for parts of that to
use a lot of the mac developer's tools.
At least that's my understanding for now.
Thanks again.

Actually you did get help. I even sent you a separate email asking if you would be willing to test a beta built of 2.7.5.
Anyway, there is a thread on Gimpchat.com where you can check out the current conversation on a beta build based on current carbon code in 2.7.5. Keep in mind that it does not have Mitch's blessings. :)

I honestly don't remember that, Partha, so you have my apologies. I would not have taken you up on the offer, as I'd never used GIMP before, and honestly don't have the time to be a tester.
But, the problem turned out not to be Gimp, but X11 that was the problem. Once that was fixed, it has worked fine since.

Switching to Mac, any advice?
Well, just to follow up I can say that it installed fine on my new (old) Mac. And as far as using it, it seems a lot better on the Mac versus Windows, though I don't know whether this is because I was on Win XP before, whether Win 7 would be a lot better, or whether the Gimp on Mac OSX package includes enhancements.
I would be interested sometime in installing it again on Linux and seeing what the look/exp was like there.
I do have to say though, that since this is the first time
I've used a Mac for a few years now, that my overall
experience is again one of joy. Of course, I did use
one for a long time before.
Thanks a lot, all.
