Configuring extra mouse buttons

I have a mouse with a bit more buttons that most (lateral scroll pushing the mouse wheel on the side, plus two buttons under the thumb). Is there a way to put these to intelligent use (on Linux)? I found how to configure the mouse wheel but not the buttons.
