Hi

How do I get Gimp 2.6.11 to work w/my SCSI scanner? I am presently running Xubuntu 11.10 Live CD. CentOS 5 s installed on my HDD. It's version of Gimp runs my SCSI scanner.

Do I need to download XSANE?

I'm pretty sure Gimp doesn't do any scanning. You need to use an external software to scan, then save as an image, and open that image with Gimp. Xsane works fine for this, I've used it many times. But first you need to get the scanner setup under Ubuntu (xsane doesn't load scanner drivers for you). Good luck finding the proper driver for a SCSI scanner. But that discussion is way outside the scope of Gimp.

On earlier versions of Gimp, up to Ver 2.6.8 you can use SCSI scanner. No fooling around getting drivers, etc.

I have been running Gimp on different versions of Linux. That might be why I did not have too fool around hunting down and installing drivers.

On 2.6.8, (Ubuntu 10.04)I can scan:

File - Create - XSane - Device dialog

On earlier Gimp versions it was:

File - Acquire - XSane - Device dialog

It might be a matter of semantics as to whether or not Gimp does the scanning, but I have always been able to start a scan w/SCSI from Gimps File Menu.

Don't know much about *ubuntu, but you probably need either xsane or iscan. In the case of xsane, IIRC you need to make the binary available to gimp, eg via a link in the plugins directory. That will allow you to scan 'from' Gimp.

Sorry to be so vague.

Not a matter of semantics but fact. Gimp *can* interface with other programs to provide an interface for other functions, scanning.

But you have provided your *own* hint to the solution. Doesn't "XSane" in your examples give you a clue? Install xsane in your present distro and use the distro's setup application to setup your scanner.

Your lack of scanning ability probably stems from using a "LiveCD" which is space crippled/doesn't include xsane.

On Linux/Unix systems, GIMP uses the SANE interface. SANE is a system for supporting scanners. You need to install it to get the scanner drivers, etc. XSane is a graphical front end to SANE. XSane can be used as a plugin to GIMP, making it show up in the File->Acquire or File->Create (depending on which version of GIMP you use) menu.

Most Linux distributions (Ubuntu, Fedora/CentOS/Red Hat, etc) will install the SANE package as a dependency to XSane, so you usually only have to install XSane. That said, it isn't clear if the symbollic link to GIMP's stock plugins directory is created for you at that time. If it is, then after installing XSane and restarting GIMP you should see the menu option. If not, you'll have to create the symbollic link manually to your .gimp-/plug-ins directory.

I don't have a scanner installed right now or I'd verify the locations and paths. Sorry.

Windows users can use the TWAIN interface. Not sure what Mac users use, but I think its TWAIN too.

FWIW: I do not think you will get it working from a live CD.

First stop is to check the sane database

http://www.sane-project.org/cgi-bin/driver.pl?manu=&model=&bus=scsi&v=&p=

If your scanner is supported then you will need to install xsane from your distribution repo.

Next step, Gimp needs a xsane-gimp plugin. Seems to be one for CentOS, bound to be one for Ubuntu.

http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idpl/8078537/com/xsane-gimp-0.991-5.el5.i386.rpm.html

All being well, there is a menu entry in Gimp: 'File' -> 'Create' -> 'Xsane' which calls xsane for scanning and passes the result back to Gimp.

Hi

XSane, comes installed w/Xubuntu 11.10. The problem is that Gimp 2.6.11 does not refer to it from it's menu as it used to do. I found it has to be accessed via the command line:

sane-find-scanner

Might be because as I already stated that I am running Live CD.

I am loath to install just to find it no workie.

Will look for a throw down HDD to install on for a test to see if XSane appears under create. I suspect it will appear in the blank space noted above.

Gimp 2.6.11 however does not list it under it's menu options like it used to.

I was using the live CD because I wanted see if I liked the distro. I did not want to go to the trouble of installing it only to find that I did not like it.

I was able to run the scanner from an older version of Gimp on another live distro (Knoppix)

Tom

Don't normally bother with 'buntu but might be possible to run a scanner from Xubuntu live.

A couple of caveats . Running Xubuntu from a USB memory stick rather than a CD. My scanner is USB driven

As my earlier post you need the xsane gimp plugin - got this from a Mepis 11 (debian squeeze) installation. The plugin is in /usr/bin and the gimp global plugins directory has a symbolic link to it. Copied the plugin to a directory on the usb containing the xubuntu installation. Also put the xscanimage plugin there as well, although does not seem to work.

Started up the live xubuntu, then to gimp preferences and added the xsane plugin directory.

screenshot http://i.imgur.com/gcSKP.jpg

Restarted gimp, and the scanner dialog is there in Gimp - File - Create and is working.

screenshot http://i.imgur.com/Asf64.jpg

Might be worth a try with a live CD and the new plugins folder on your hdd.
