Advice

Dear Gimp,

Sorry if this is rude...

I used GIMP 5 or 6 years ago and was unimpressed.

I used it over the past few days and was unimpressed.

I want to get away from windows but I can't because quite frankly GIMP is crap and I *need* photoshop. I could never use this buggy junk pile over photoshop... I can't even list the reasons. For f***s sake you could at least make some of the keyboard commands the same, WHY NOT? ARE THEY PATENTED??

Is pragmatism a word that is lost on all of the Linux "community"?

Here is a piece of advice if you actually want to people to use your software in any siginificant numbers...

COPY PHOTOSHOP.

Thanks.

Just do this:

Ctrl+Space+Left Mouse = ZOOM IN Ctrl+Space+Alt+Left Mouse = ZOOM OUT

IS IT HARD OR WHAT?

The way panning works in Gimp is pure CRAP. Space+Hold Left Mouse+Drag = Pan

TRY IT.

If you changed those things you'd break down 99% of the initial annoyance of using the pile of crap you calle GIMP, gimp is GIMPED as it is.

gimp != photoshop

no, but some of the want-a-be-users

gimp != photoshop
and is not intended to.

Thanks.

I believe that you sincerely do not mean that!

Judging from the wording, this seems like a cheap trolling attempt, but you know ou can change the keyboard shortcuts, right?

GIMP is not and will never be a Photoshop clone.

Actually, I prefer this:

+ = zoom in - = zoom out

(notice the complete lack of multiple keys/buttons involved, I can do this even if I only have 1 remaining finger to share between both hands)

I find your observations petty and non-helpful to this mailing list. You're not asking for help, you're trying to impose someone else's manifesto on everyone else. Please don't clutter this friendly and helpful mailing list with your blind and narrow-minded demands.

Advice

If you are trying to start a flame war, please just move along.

TBH I don't understand this.

I started using GIMP about 4 years ago. Since then I have used a variety of other image editors including Photo Shop - not for extended periods of time, mind you. I have found that once you learn one advanced raster image editor swapping around from one to another is not difficult _at all_.

Also you will find that by moving from one software package to another, there are differences that can be slightly irritating. Don't believe me? Try some CAD software. I usually get a little laugh when I rotate instead of pan (or something similar) after an absence of using that CAD package.

IMO the fact is that if you want to use multiple software packages (even unrelated ones like GIMP/Photo Shop and AutoCad) you have to be willing to deal with some incompatible user interface issues. And even these issues are minor for the most part.

If you need Photoshop, run it under Wine. CS3 and CS5 run very well according to the Wine Compatibility list: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=17

The crux of Open Source software is collaboration. This is an interesting question. Why don't you try to find the answer for us?

Doing so would certainly draw Gimp into the shallow waters of patent infringement.

That's easy -- buy a Mac. That way you can both get away from Windows and continue to use Photoshop.
