Edit text problem?

I made a banner with a transparent background and put text onto it. There's only 1 layer- the background. It was saved as a gif.

Is there a way to edit the text in it again because I can't edit it now?

Your image was not saved, which would have been saving to XCF. It was exported to GIF, which does not remember anything about layers, for example.

You cannot change your image back to a text layer, but you can still change it. It would probably be better to start again, and to save your image XCF, before exporting also to GIF.

:D pls attach the banner, so that I can suggest possible workflows. Check you documentary history in GIMP, may be some intermediate stage is left in temp.

You need to save your image in GIMP native format using .XCF extension in order to be able to edit your text at a later time.
