Change background to tranparent?

I made a web banner (728 x 90) but forgot to set the background to being transparent (so the web page background can show through).

Do you know how I can easily change the background of the banner to transparent?

Thank you

(1)make a new layer, with 'Alpha' attribute. (in a new image file) (2) select and cut the image from your banner, and copy to this alpha layer ( so that only the area having visible pixels is opaque) (3) Save in a format which preserves Alpha(transparency) information warning: this could go wrong, if the background layer is opaque. delete the background layer if so.

please correct if am wrong, or easier steps are available.

Hi Peace,

Depends on whether you have the file saved in XCF format, how many layers, etc.

Let's assume it is a GIF. In crude terms:

1. Select background 2. Add alpha channel
3. Hit DELETE
4. Re-save

Depending on complexity of the image it will be Step #1 that could take a little time.

If the background is a rather different color from the rest: colors/color to alpha, and pick the background color.
