Selecting the Value layer from HSV

I'm trying to unsharping an image using the technique described in the user's guide. Decompose to HSV, unsharpen the Value layer, and Compose. Unfortunately the user's manual is not specific on how to select the Value layer, so I had to guess.

I opened the layers dialog and clicked the "eye" for Value and left the other layers "uneyed".

I guessed wrong as the comnposed image (green pines with snowy mountain background), came out with white trees and navy snow. Clearly I did something wrong. What did I miss?

Thanks.

Selecting the Value layer from HSV

Did you decompose to HSV first ?

Yes, that part went fine. The heading indicated HSV, 3 layers. Thanks for asking

Selecting the Value layer from HSV

Dear Byram,

Can you easily explain what the "alpha" checkerboard layer is and what its for?

This is new to me and if this is not easy for you to explain, pass on trying and I will ask someone else. no problema.

sincerely, Harry

Selecting the Value layer from HSV

Quoting Byram :

I opened the layers dialog and clicked the "eye" for Value and left the other layers "uneyed".

To make a layer active (a more accurate description than to "select a layer"), click on its thumbnail preview, not the eyeball. Once the Value layer is active, you can run the Unsharp Mask filter on it.
