Stripes spheres

Hi all,
I really don't know how to call this kind of image. I'm looking for a tutorial to make something like the first image you can see in this page:
http://www.logomyway.com/designerMessage.php?cid=915&did=1501 Any idea?
Thanks in advance.

Well I guess the trick is to lay out some stripes and then Filters->Map->Map to Object. This will give you an idea, http://members.pcug.org.au/~rcook/images/stripes.png

So just experiment with various types of stripes and direction?

I don't think there's an easy way to do it. It has the back as well, and I bet it was hand-drawn in a vector drawing app like Inkscape.

I think Owen is probably right, Inkscape is the tool to use. I just wanted to be sure that there is not a way to do it with Gimp. Thanks guys for your help.

Couldn't you just apply the same "map to object" technique to two different layers and then put them over eachother?

Actually, Map Object would work just fine, and it will give  you the back.  What you do is just make your stripes on a transparent background.  Delete the default layer, add a new transparent layer and put in your stripes, leaving a transparent gap between them, then do map object.
