Using  Windows 7 with Gimp 2.6.8 I can't hide the toolbox. If I click on the x-box the entire app closes.  I can't see anything in  Preferences. ??? Thomas J. Hart

That's how GIMP 2.6 works. In GIMP 2.8 you will be able to close the toolbox.

And using the Tab key is not what you want to hide the tool box?

Actually I tried that and it didn't work, so I thought it was a Linux or Mac version thing. Then I realised I was trying it with the ToolBox as the active window. Once I figured this out, and had the main window active, Tab hides the toolbox, of course. Still the promised functionality in 2.8 will be welcome. When you minimise an application, you expect any tool dialogs and such to minimise (or auto-hide) at the same time. You certainly don't expect that closing a tool dialog will close your application!
