change of color

Hi everybody,
I'm truly newbie with gimp and I'm trying to figure out how I could change the collors of an black-white image with different shades of grey. I'd like to transform those shades of grey into shades of magenta. Pretty simple to imagine, but not so straightforward to do it seems Have you any idea ?

Have you tried image->colorize?

I opened a photo and did: 1. Image->Mode->Grayscale (it was a color photo) 2. Image->Mode->RGB
3. Image->Colorize (drag the slider to the appropriate hue)

Thanks Chris, I managed to do it. The key is to be in RGB mode which gives you access to a lot more options like Color->Map->Color Exchange to do the finishes
